The letter desk is meant to work with a keyboard, a screen reader or reduced motion turned on, not just a mouse and full animation.

Standard we work to

We aim to meet WCAG 2.1 at level AA across the pages that matter for actually using the service: writing, receiving, replying, the archive and account settings. That is a target we check against, not a certificate — see “Known gaps” below for where we currently fall short.

What’s in place

• Every dialog — sign-in, the envelope, wallet, reward-ad prompt — traps focus, is reachable by keyboard and closes on Esc without losing your place on the page.
• The account menu and moderation queue support arrow-key navigation, matching how a native menu behaves.
• Leaves drifting in the background, the unsealing animation and other motion stop under your system’s reduce motion setting.
• Colour is never the only signal — status changes (a used-up daily letter, a quarantined report) pair a colour with a text label.
• Type is self-hosted and loads with the page; nothing waits on a third-party font request before text is readable.

Known gaps

The drifting-paper background is decorative and hidden from assistive technology, but it is a live canvas rather than a static image, which can still cost battery or attention on lower-powered devices even with motion reduced. We have not yet run a full screen-reader pass against every language the site can display a letter in. If either of those — or anything else — gets in your way, tell us; that report moves the list above.
